Muslim Brotherhood From an American perspective
Opinion on the Muslim Brotherhood
From an American perspective
Although the Muslim Brotherhood started in 1928, most Americans have never heard of the group. It was not until the attacks in New York on September 11th, 2001, did everyday Americans start to pay attention to terrorist groups abroad. Americans then suddenly became hypervigilant on the various Islamic fundamentalist terror groups. Whether it was Al-Qaida, Hezbollah, the Taliban, HAMAS or some other perceived groups, American were laser focused on them. The Muslim Brotherhood was not mentioned in the mainstream American media at that time. The U.S. military watched the Muslim Brotherhood and people that were in the know, fully understood that the Muslim Brotherhood had violent tenancies. It was the understanding of those in the position to provide national security analysis that the Muslim Brotherhood was a terrorist group although it had not been declared to be by the U.S. government.
Then came the election win of the new President of Egypt Mohamed Morsi in June 2012. Mohamed was a member and supported by the Muslim Brotherhood that had been legalized to exist in Egypt just prior to the election. This sent shockwaves through the American military and government community. They wondered how it could happen. How could a man in a terrorist group get elected to President of Egypt. Although too late to stop it and interact, American strategies contemplated on what to do. The short Morsi Administration became a concern for the American government. There was relief when President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi came to power.
In more recent times we saw the leaders of the Lebanese and Egyptian chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood called for violence against Israel during the October 7th, 2023, invasion into Israel. Obviously, not the actions of a valid fraternal organization promoting brotherhood or love.
On November 24th, 2025, President Trump has issued an executive order designating certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Specifically, those chapters which are in Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan. Trumps order specifies Executive Order 13224 of September 23rd, 2001, by George Bush. This gives authority to the U.S. forces to attack and disrupt financing of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
Trump’s executive order has been well received in the United States , but some say it falls short by not classifying all chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization as a whole. Trumps supporters praise Trumps move and state that is a start. A move that needed to happen to one day declare all chapters of the group a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
Trumps executive order could be a signal to the U.S. Senate that he will pass their bill referring to the matter that was introduced on July 15th, 2025. The Senate bill 2293 seeks to deem all chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood in the world as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
Americans being still shell shocked by the September 11th, 2001, attacks were only reassured by the October 7th, 2023, Israel massacre that there is good reason to combat groups like the Muslim Brotherhood. Americans see the writing on the wall when it comes t to maintaining their safety and security. They see that sometimes the U.S. must act preemptively on the matters of terrorism.
Most Americans will agree with the move to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
